The Department of Cooperatives is an important organization under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives of Bangladesh, which works for the registration, supervision and development of cooperative societies in the country.
# Vision and Mission
– Vision: Sustainable cooperatives,
– Mission: To build sustainable cooperatives in the agricultural, non-agricultural, financial and service sectors by increasing the capacity of cooperatives and creating entrepreneurs.
# Main Functions
1. Registration and Supervision of Cooperative Societies:
Conducting registration, inspection and audit activities to ensure good governance of cooperative societies.
2. Training and Capacity Building:
Providing training through the Bangladesh Cooperative Academy and 10 regional cooperative training institutes to develop the skills of cooperatives.
3. Entrepreneurship Creation and Employment:
Support for self-employment and entrepreneurship through capital formation and investment.
4. Empowerment of Women and the General Public:
Implementation of cooperative-based projects and programs for the socio-economic development of rural women and the general public.
5. Branding and Market Linkage:
Support for developing the skills of cooperatives in branding cooperative products and establishing market linkages.
# Organizational Structure
The Chief Executive Officer of the Cooperatives Department is the Registrar and Director General. The Department has offices at a total of 4 levels across the country, including Upazila/Metropolitan Thana, District, Division and Headquarters. In addition, there is a National Training Academy (Bangladesh Cooperative Academy) in Comilla and 10 regional cooperative training institutes in Mymensingh, Feni, Naogaon, Kushtia, Faridpur, Moulvibazar, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal and Narsingdi.
